When we moved from South Carolina to Florida, life was a bit of a whirlwind. Our new construction home wasn’t quite finished yet, so we were living in temporary housing without any of our usual party supplies, craft bins, or decorations. Still, Elsa’s 8th birthday was coming up — and no matter how chaotic life felt, we weren’t going to let it pass without a celebration.

The goal was simple: keep it low-effort, fun, and beautiful. A stress-free summer party with a tropical twist, just for our family and a few special guests.
The Setting

Since our own house wasn’t move-in ready, we hosted the party in my in-laws’ backyard. Their covered lanai, sparkling pool, and palm-lined lawn gave us the perfect backdrop for a laid-back tropical vibe. Elsa loves pink, so we leaned into that and gave the party a flamingo theme.

A view of the pool area, featuring giant flamingo floats and a mini table just right for little party guests.
We kept the decorations easy but festive: paper fans and lanterns hung from the patio ceiling, leis were draped around chairs, and pink inflatable flamingos floated around the pool. I added a folding room divider behind the drink station and strung tropical lights across it — just enough to make things feel special without dragging out bins of decor.

Guests & Vibe

This party was mostly family — just my three kids, one sweet neighbor girl, and a handful of adults. Elsa hadn’t started at her new school yet, so we didn’t know many people in the area, and honestly, that made it all the more peaceful. There were no high-pressure games or jam-packed itineraries. Just relaxed fun under the Florida sun.

Flamingo Fashion

Of course, we had to dress the part! Everyone in our family wore flamingo-themed tropical outfits, and the kids had matching flamingo swimsuits for pool time. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it made the whole day feel a little more festive — and made for some cute photos.

Activity Stations

We didn’t plan any organized activities, but I set up a few self-guided stations around the pool for the kids (and adults) to enjoy at their own pace:
🍹 Make-Your-Own Tropical Drinks: A favorite with all ages. (Click here for details and a free printable drink menu!)
🫧 Giant Bubble Station: A big tub of homemade bubble solution and a dozen different bubble wands. It was a hit with kids and adults alike.
🦩 Flamingo Ring Toss: Classic backyard fun with a tropical twist.
💦 Pool Time: With bright flamingo floats and plenty of sunshine.
🪅 Flamingo Piñata: Because no party is complete without one.
🎨 Painting Station: A table with mini canvases and sun catchers, plus simple instructions to paint their own flamingo art.

Everything was laid out so the kids could bounce from one station to the next without needing instructions. It made the day feel spontaneous and easy — and left me free to enjoy the moment, too.

Food & Dessert

Since this was a midday pool party, I kept the food simple with a few light snacks and mini sandwiches. For dessert, I made flamingo-themed cupcakes, which were just the right amount of sweet without being over the top. Simple, summery, and totally on theme.
